How To Quit Smoking: Follow These Tips To End The Nasty Habit

Let us be frank with ourselves. It's really hard to quit smoking and aside from our willingness to quit smoking, we need some things that we think can help us kick this nasty habit of ours and throw those cigarettes out of the window and out of our lives for good. But, hey, I just wanted to let you know that I've quit smoking 7 years ago but it was not a pleasure cruise at all. I had experienced a lot of potholes and detours when it comes to stopping smoking. If you are not too determined and focused, you will surely turn your head and think that you should go back from where you came from, right?

Actually, in anything we do, we all need to educate ourselves to go on with what we are after for. In the case of smoking cessation, you need to educate yourself with everything about smoking like tips and advices on how to end your addiction. Here are some of the things that I did when I started to stop smoking and was very successful with it.


Tip No. 1: Don't Be a Cold Turkey

You might be thinking right now that you just need to toss your cigarettes out and say, "I quit!". That's not how you're going to do it. More than 90% of people who give up smoking like a cold turkey ended up going back from where they've come from: Square One! It's because nicotine is addictive. I sought help from a professional therapist and she did helped me and guided me to the path of no-smoking.

Tip No. 2: Nicotine-Replacement Therapy

With the help of that professional therapist, she recommended me to try nicotine-replacement therapy. It's because of the withdrawal symptoms that we tend to go back to Square One. With the help of nicotine gums, lozenges and patches, it would be easier to handle the symptoms or control them instead of them controlling you. That's what I also did and it helped a lot.

Tip No. 3: Try Prescription Pills

If you think that products that contain nicotine are not the best for you, try to visit your doctor and ask for some prescription pills. The prescription pills that my doctor gave me helped me reduce the cravings. They affect the chemicals in the brain that will "tell" you to smoke. They also help reduce depression or inability to concentrate.

Tip No. 4: Don't Do It Alone

When I decided to stop smoking, I challenge some of my smoking friends in a contest who can stop smoking first. I've also told some of my friends, my family and relatives what my plans were and they helped me by reminding me of my quest. I've also underwent behavioral therapy. With these things combining them with nicotine replacement products, I've boosted my odds of success.


Tip No. 5: Learn To Manage Stress

When I work, I always get stressed out therefore, I would puff a stick or two (or more) to help me fight stress. Nicotine can really help you cope with stress. When you quit smoking, you need to find other ways to help you manage stress. I went to a massage parlor regularly, listened to relaxing music during the first year and I've tried to learn yoga and they all helped me manage my stress.

Tip No. 6: Stop Alcohol and Other Triggers of Smoke

I was also a heavy drinker and the more I drink, the more cigarettes I can puff. So, when I decided to quit smoking, I stayed away from alcohol, I stayed away from places where people smoke and drink.

Tip No. 7: Get Yourself Busy

When you get busy, you tend to forget lighting a cigarette. But beware of stress. You can be busy without getting stressed out (see Tip No. 5)

Tip No. 8: Look at Your Family

Take a look at your family. Would you like your children become victims of passive smoking? Would you like them to follow your footsteps? Would you like to give them the best life?

Tip No. 9: Reward Yourself

One of the perks that made me quit smoking is the money that I will save if I quit. I quit and so, I have extra money to buy the things that I want and the things that my family needs.

Tip No. 10: Do It Because You Want To (For Your Health and Other's)

When I started quitting, I thought about things like: my blood pressure will start to decrease after only 20 minutes of not smoking. Within two to three months, the risk of heart attack will also lower down. I won't be a victim of heart diseases, lung diseases, stroke and cancer. I can taste more, breath more, live a vibrant and healthy life.

There are still many tips and advices when you want to go through a smoking cessation process. However, the bottom line is: if you give up smoking, you will really be living a healthy and vibrant life and that goes also for the people around you.
